Project : Wet Gels

Sector : Chemical

Value : £750,000

Scope : Electrical, Control & Instrumentation

Challenge

Our client set out to upgrade and generally modernise the capacity and production of the existing Wet Get process for the site. This included fifteen new washer and conveyor systems. Due to the complexity of the project work especially the enabling parts, our client opted to single source to Picow who knew the site very well, with the work in itself being difficult to plan and manage. Existing services ran through the demolition area which had to be identified, re-routed or supported from temporary management systems. Some newly redundant services ran through existing live production areas that run 24/7, which we and our client knew would prove particularly difficult to co-ordinate.

Solution

Due to the complex planning with all site key stakeholders and the invasive and high risk nature of the project, a long programme was allowed at 16 months. Picow had to remain flexible with manning levels throughout which is what this client had come to expect. Although much of the technical design had already been completed by a consultant, Picow had full responsibility in designing and confirming final primary and secondary cable management routes, with this being the most difficult part of the design to complete and co-ordinate. Picow were then responsible for the full electrical, control and instrumentation installation including small power and lighting.

Outcome

Our experience of this particular site in this particular instance paid dividends. Although progress was slow as planned, the final result was a first class electrical installation, however much of the success lay in what could not be seen. The enabling element of this project was completed safely and without any incident to cause disruption to our clients ongoing vital manufacturing processes. Off the back of this project, Picow went on to secure three more of a high profile and complex nature.
