Sector: Food & Beverage

Project: Main Domestic Cold Water

Value: £750,000

Scope: Mechanical & Electrical

Challenge

Our clients remit was to replace the whole domestic cold water main pipework throughout all five manufacturing areas around their substantial site. Picow secured this project through competitive tendering and with a solid reputation of completing many high profile projects for this client in the past. Our design had to take into account varying usage around all areas of the site and would involve installing in a combination of live production, manufacturing and warehousing facilities with an emphasis on installing as much as possible external to the main buildings so as to reduce risk to production operations.

Solution

The final scope tied in the new pipework to the existing incoming main to the site. The new pipework was stainless steel throughout all areas and was fitted with a combination of schedule 10, welded and press-fit joints. Manual isolation valves where installed at various key locations throughout the new system of pipework along with remote monitored metering fitted to five secondary runs into mains areas. All external pipework was trace heated, insulated and clad in stainless steel, with various power supplies installed to feed local trace heating controllers.  Internal pipework in production areas was also stainless steel, insulated and stainless steel clad in parts without the obvious need for trace heating.

Outcome

The final water treatment process included filling, testing, cleaning and chlorinating the system, split into five key phases. The distinct difficulty with the project was during the planning and requirement to remain flexible when changing over from old to new, whereby production will have been affected. Very close liaison was had with all key stakeholders from various departments around site to ensure that they were consulted and briefed daily with activities and any potential risks. The installation was first class as was expected by our client, along with our project management that ultimately ensured the works were completed without any affect to site operations.
