Challenge
Our client, one of worlds largest food manufacturers based in Lancashire, engaged with Picow early to begin planning and outlining a base design for what would be their largest electrical infrastructure upgrade since the site was built over 60 years ago. The focus for this phase of the works was on a new 6KVA primary LV infrastructure that could extend throughout their warehouse and packing facility as well as a full power and lighting upgrade for the warehouse area. Phasing and changeover planning proved to be complex to maintain existing production operations and formed the basis of design development. Through demonstration of our in-depth capabilities, knowledge and value engineering options, Picow went on to secure the project in its entirety.

Solution
Emanating from existing primary sub stations, were three primary LV supplies rated at 3200A, 2500A and 2500A. Three large switchrooms were constructed to house large secondary switch panels on which these three primary supplies were connected. Three additional switchrooms were also constructed and fed from the main switchrooms with 1250A supplies. The six switchrooms in total constructed, housed all main LV panels and bespoke final circuit distribution panels and were strategically located to enable easy distribution and allow a smooth transition from old to new power. As part of the LV infrastructure upgrade, Picow replaced all sub main cabling, small power and installed a new LED Sygnify / Philips lighting control system in addition to other general building service improvements where required. Upon changeover completion of each area, Picow carefully and systematically isolated and removed the existing LV infrastructure.

Outcome
The primary difficulty with this project was to minimise the affect that such invasive work could have on a fully operational manufacturing facility. Up front planning helped to greatly reduce any impact especially during the changeover phases of the project. However it was noted that the real success of this project lay in the site teams ability to liaise and co-ordinate all activities with our client. Picow maintained a flexible approach and reacted quickly to changes where production planning was concerned. Technically and operationally this project was a complete success!
