Challenge
This project was borne from the Transport for Wales Station Improvement Scheme in partnership with the Railway Heritage Trust. This grade 2 listed station is on the North Wales coast line that links Holyhead and Chester. The station is unstaffed and has been for a number of years, hence the need for significant improvement. Picow through competitive tendering, won this turnkey project to bring the station buildings back to their former glory! A difficult project to deliver due to the station remaining fully operational through the entirety of the programme of work.

Solution
Our works to restore this grade 2 listed building included a new platform DNO electrical power supply, new doors and sash windows refurbishment, DDA compliant facilities, a full electrical rewire, new lighting and power, various types of new internal flooring, internal plastering and new ceilings, new kitchen and white goods. External works consisted of a new DDA compliant access ramp, extensive painting and repairs to the existing roof. All works were completed in line with the Railway heritage requirements.

Outcome
Logistically a very difficult project that was completed on time and within the available budget. The experience of our workforce to work safely around the general public in parts was key to the delivery of the project, in addition to working closely and remaining flexible to the strict requirements of the Railway Heritage. From the meticulous plastering and decorating to the careful sash window refurbishment and the exquisite, finished floors installation, every detail was executed with unwavering commitment and respect for the building’s original structure. By seamlessly blending modern functionality with traditional design in elements such as the new kitchen and associated mechanical and electrical works, our team has successfully revitalized Abergele Station, standing as a shining example of historic restoration. This project showcases our dedication to excellence, craftsmanship, and historical preservation, ensuring the station’s rich heritage is celebrated for years to come.
