Sector: Railway

Project: Headbolt Lane Station

Value: £1,700,000

Scope: Mechanical, Electrical & Telecoms

Challenge

The construction of the £80m Headbolt Lane Railway Station marked a significant milestone in the infrastructure expansion of the Merseyrail network, connecting the previously terminating station at Kirkby to the newly constructed station. The new station provides a transformation to the network characterised by meticulous attention to detail and cutting-edge technology. Through our long standing reputation in the Rail industry and after a competitive tendering process, Picow were awarded the full Mechanical and Electrical package for the new station which later extended to some construction work.

Solution

Our engineers were responsible for equipping the station building with cutting-edge amenities, such as MVHR equipment, water heaters, and fire alarm systems, along with modern Zumtobel luminaires and PIRs for optimal lighting and energy efficiency. Within the carpark, state-of-the-art facilities have been installed, including new Abacus lighting columns, ASD luminaires, and Charles Endirect Beacons on the zebra crossings, enhancing visibility and security. Moreover, the station platforms feature advanced elements like customer information screens, CCTV cameras, and Altron CCTV columns for enhanced surveillance. With the inclusion of secondary means of escape gate access control and dry riser outlet boxes, our installation at Headbolt Lane Railway Station prioritises passenger safety and comfort at every turn.

Outcome

Following the completion of our successful installation work, Picow remained on hand to help with a phased roll out of services to ease in the new technology that the station now provides for passengers of its new battery powered trains. Working directly with Network Rail, Picow also completed turnkey construction works to enhance various other parts of the station. Picow are extremely proud to have played such a significant part in bringing what is a major rail project in our local region, to life!
