Sector: Railway

Project: North Allerton Station (AFA) Scheme

Value: £260,000

Scope: Mechanical, Electrical & Telecoms

Challenge

Our client Network Rail approved the £3m Access For All (AFA) Scheme at Northallerton station in a bid to make access in and around the station from car parks and from one platform to another much easier with an improved subway and new accessible lifts. Picow where identified as a key partner to complete the Mechanical, Electrical and Telecoms package of works beginning with a thorough survey to identify existing services that would be affected by this work. We than completed a detailed design to identify the full scope to deal with existing and new requirements for the project.

Solution

Following the completion of our comprehensive design package, Picow were then awarded the full installation package of works. Enabling works included the relocation of existing LV distribution equipment from an existing switchroom into a new external DNO supply cubicle to which the existing OLE traction bond was also diverted involving specialist contractors. As part of the main install a new MCCB panelboard was installed feeding platform 1 & 2 lift motor rooms and distribution boards. New power was installed to a points heating cubicle and a new distribution board to serve new lighting. ASD Viper lighting was installed within the handrails of the new access stairs on both platforms and the existing lighting within the subway and on platforms were upgraded to new ASD Invisible fittings.

Solution

Our mechanical scope included the installation of ventilation and air conditioning to the lift motor rooms to ensure that they maintained a temperature below 20 degrees C. Fire alarm VESDA systems were also installed within subway areas. Our telecoms package included the install and commissioning of new CCTV and help points to strategic locations. As part of the commissioning process, Picow engineers attended site during hours of dark to ensure that all lighting levels met the Network Rail standards also and that which had been calculated at design stage.

Outcome

Completed within very tight timescales considering 60% of our work needed to be completed outside of normal hours due to public traffic, the co-ordination between all trades and the subsequent standards of workmanship were completed to very high standards. An invasive project such as this where much disruption can be expected on platforms is where our experience of working within a live rail environment adds unseen value.
