Project: Cleanroom HVAC Upgrade

Value: £725,000

Disciplines: Mechanical & Electrical

Challenge

Our clients problem consisted of a class 8 cleanroom that required cooling, humidification and dehumidification to help with product quality and also general comfort of staff on the area. Picow were engaged with at project inception and helped our client determine the right solution for their problem and assisted them at every RIBA design stage, budget costings and also assumed the roles of principle designer and principle contractor. One of the major challenges encountered during the project was the restrictive location of the plantroom on the first floor, making it difficult to transport and install the new equipment. This meant a plan on how new and existing plant would moved was critical to reducing impact on site operations.

Solution

In order to overcome the challenge to overcome the restrictive location of the plantroom, Picow designed and erected a specialised scaffold deck platform within the warehouse. This allowed for the safe removal of the existing supply fan and filters, as well as the assembly of the new plant and equipment within the plantroom. All new plant came flatpack and was assembled in its final location. The final scope of the HVAC upgrade included the replacement of the existing supply air fan and filters with state-of-the-art air handling plant and equipment. This would enable precise temperature and humidity control, meeting the specific requirements of the manufacturing process. To achieve this, Picow installed a new double stacked supply air handling unit (AHU), desiccant dehumidifier, humidifier, and return air handling unit. Additionally, a new chiller and chilled water distribution system were provided to supply cooling to the AHU.

Outcome

By upgrading the HVAC system, our client can now enjoy a range of benefits that enhance the functionality and performance of their manufacturing area. The work completed on this project highlights the importance of an efficient and effective system in a manufacturing environment. Through our expertise and capabilities, we successfully overcame the challenges posed by the restricted location of the plantroom. The new air handling plant and equipment provide our client with enhanced temperature and humidity control, improving both product quality and employee comfort. With improved energy efficiency and a reliable cooling system, our client can now operate with confidence and efficiency.
